Catalog and Curricula

The Office of the Registrar’s Curriculum Management webpage is key for links to Curriculum How-To Guides, Catalog Process Timeline, Approving Catalog Pages, Next Catalog, etc.

The Registrar’s Office is maintaining Course Editing Workday Materials and NextCatalog Editing Materials in CyBox; you will find recordings of online trainings and other helpful information.

Course-level editing in Workday for the 2026-27 Catalog occurred during Spring 2025 Semester. Course-level edits are reviewed by LASCC Cluster Area Approvers and the LASCC Chair.

Catalog editing of narratives/requirements/four-year plans (https://nextcatalog.registrar.iastate.edu/) will occur in Fall 2025 for the 2026-27 Catalog. Edits must be submitted by November 1, 2025.

  • Please note: If your department/program wants to include minimum grade requirements for a pre-requisite, specific course, or set of courses, approval is needed from LAS Academic Standards and Admissions Committee and Faculty Senate Academic Standards Committee. (Contact Stephanie Hamilton, slh@iastate.edu, for guidance on the process.)

New experimental course proposals can be submitted for review by LSACC; see below for guidance.

Please reach out to Stephanie Hamilton, slh@iastate.edu, if you have questions or need guidance.

Each member of the LAS Curriculum Committee focuses catalog efforts on a cluster of disciplines: Listing of Cluster Area Responsibilities. These individuals can answer your specific curricular questions.

General Education

LASCC reviews courses for inclusion on the LAS General Education list.  Programs should periodically review their general education offerings. Send requested changes to lasccadmin@iastate.edu. Requests should include justification for the specified general education area and a course syllabus. Additions can be made at any time; deletions will be timed as appropriate with the release of new catalogs and student course registration.

Experimental Course Proposals

For guaranteed review before registration period, Experimental Course Proposals should be ready for the LASCC by these dates:

  • Spring Course Offerings – September 30 (After September 30, proposals will be reviewed as time allows, in the order they are received.)
  • Summer and Fall Course Offerings – February 15  (After February 15, proposals will be reviewed as time allows, in the order they are received.)

Experimental Course Proposals received after the deadline will be reviewed in the order received and as time allows on the agenda. Please note that proposals involving additional colleges and/or dual-listings (graduate-level) involve more review steps and more time.

To submit a proposal:

Download and complete the New Course Proposal Form linked in the KBA Workday Student: Create Course Definitions prior to creating the course in Workday; the form focuses on development of the course content. Once your department/program curriculum approvals are received, send the proposal to lasccadmin@iastate.edu. Please do not “Create Course” in Workday until after LASCC review as it is not possible to edit along the way in Workday. The completed form (and revised form, post-LASCC review, as needed) needs to be uploaded when the course is created in Workday.

When it comes time to create the course in Workday, make sure to enter the Effective Date and First Available Date as 8/15/202X, with the year being the fall of the academic year of the initial offering. Please note that a record created with an incorrect Effective Date (according to ISU’s Workday conventions) will be denied and you’ll have to start over. For example, if you want to offer a course in Spring 2026, you will still enter 8/15/2025.

Proposals for dual-listed (undergraduate/graduate) courses require the Graduate College’s dual-listing section of the course proposal form. After LASCC approval, two courses (undergraduate- and graduate-level) will need to be created in Workday; again, please wait to create the courses in Workday until LASCC approves the new courses.
