LAS Faculty Awards

The LAS College will review, select and forward candidate nominations for corresponding university awards from the nominations submitted to the college, and for similar awards when appropriate as noted below.  For corresponding awards, all LAS eligibility and review criteria are intended to agree with the university criteria.

Although some university awards allow for direct nomination, most nominations route through the academic colleges (see the individual descriptions). Nominees for LAS awards must be LAS faculty or staff members.  Past recipients are not eligible to receive the same LAS award again.

Regents award

Regents Award for Faculty Excellence

The Regents Award for Faculty Excellence is awarded to a faculty member who is recognized as an outstanding university citizen.

• Eligibility: All faculty (term, tenure-eligible, tenured) who have been employed for a minimum of five (5) years as a faculty member at Iowa State University are eligible to be nominated. More than 50% of the nominee’s responsibilities must be faculty, not administrative, duties. Part-time faculty with less than a 50% appointment are ineligible for this recognition. Distinguished Professors, University Professors, and Morrill Professors are not eligible for this award. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.

Distinguished Professor

A Distinguished Professorship is awarded for exemplary performance in research and/or creative activities as reflected by a national or international reputation in the nominee’s discipline.

• Award guidelines and nomination information
• Eligibility: Nominees should hold the rank of professor and should have served for at least five years prior to current year on the Iowa State University faculty. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.

University Professor

The University Professorship recognizes faculty members whose professional work has focused upon effecting positive, significant institutional change at Iowa State University.

• Award guidelines and nomination information
• Eligibility: Nominees should hold the rank of professor and should have served for at least ten years on the Iowa State University faculty prior to the beginning of the academic year in which they are nominated. The nominees must be individuals whose contributions extend well beyond a one-time impact. Having held an administrative position in and of itself is insufficient for consideration for this recognition. Faculty who have served as administrators (e.g., department chairs, deans, vice president, provost or staff members in those offices) may be nominated only after they have been out of their administrative roles and functioning as faculty members for at least three years. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the University Awards.

Morrill Professor

The Morrill Professorship recognizes faculty members whose professional work has demonstrated outstanding success in teaching and learning in undergraduate, graduate and/or Extension/outreach programs which is reflected by a national or international reputation in the nominee’s discipline.

LAS Award for Early Achievement in Research

Recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in research and/or creative activity unusually early in his or her professional career.

• Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty who have had independent academic careers of less than 6 years and a minimum of two academic years of appointment as an ISU faculty member. An independent academic career is defined as the start of a tenure-track position.  Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the university awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of exemplary research/creative accomplishments as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. National and/or international recognition in the academic community. Evidence of a positive impact of their research/creative activity on their discipline. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work produced since the start of their independent academic career.

LAS Award for Mid-Career Achievement in Research

Recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in research and/or creative activity at the mid-career stage.

• Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty who have had independent academic careers of 6 to 13 years and a minimum of three years of appointment as an ISU faculty member.  An independent academic career is defined as the start of a tenure-track position.  Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the university awards ceremony. Distinguished professors are not eligible for this award.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of exemplary research/creative accomplishments and impact of their work on their discipline as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. Significant national and international recognition in the academic community. Evidence of a positive impact of their mentorship and/or teaching on undergraduate students, graduate students and/or postdoctoral associates. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work since the start of their independent academic career.

LAS Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research

Recognizes faculty members for outstanding career achievements in research and/or creative activity.

• Eligibility: Tenured faculty who have had independent academic careers of more than 13 years and who have been employed by ISU for a minimum of 5 years. An independent academic career is defined as the start of a tenure-track faculty position. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the university awards ceremony. Distinguished professors are not eligible for this award.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding research/creative accomplishments and impact of their work on their discipline as evaluated by peers and experts in their field. Outstanding national and international recognition in the academic community. Evidence of a substantial positive impact of their mentorship and/or teaching on undergraduate students, graduate students and/or postdoctoral associates. The candidates will be judged by the body of their work since the start of their independent academic career.

ISU Interdisciplinary Team Research Award

The Interdisciplinary Team Research Award recognizes an interdisciplinary team of faculty researchers (at least 2 or more) with outstanding achievements who have made a significant contribution to the University’s research and scholarship mission through successful interdisciplinary collaborations.

• Eligibility: At least two of the nominees must hold the rank of Assistant Professor or above, and must be from different departments.  Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.
• Note: The Interdisciplinary Team Research Award is a university award and does not have an LAS equivalent.

Education Awards

LAS will select nominations for the corresponding University Awards from the candidates submitted to the College.

A faculty member may not be considered for two LAS teaching awards in the same year. Faculty who have received an LAS teaching award in the past five years are not eligible for an LAS teaching award in this cycle.

The recipients of the Cassling Family Faculty Awards for Early Achievement in Teaching and Outstanding Achievement in Teaching are chosen from among candidates nominated for teaching awards.  The recipient of the Shakeshaft Master Teacher Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences is chosen from among candidates in the humanities and social science disciplines nominated for teaching awards.  Neither of these awards accepts direct nominations but we encourage nominations for other teaching awards, which will also be reviewed for these awards.

LAS Award for Early Achievement in Academic Advising

Recognizes ISU faculty or staff who have demonstrated outstanding performance in academic advising of undergraduate students early in their professional careers.

• Eligibility: ISU faculty or staff who have a minimum of two years and not more than five years of significant work in academic advising undergraduate students at Iowa State University. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony. An advisor may receive the award, or its predecessor award, only once.
• Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as an advisor, documented by student evaluations, student letters of support and/or supporting documentation of peers who work closely with the nominee.

Ruth W. Swenson Award for Outstanding Advising

Recognize faculty or professional staff who have continued to demonstrate outstanding performance in advising Iowa State University undergraduate students throughout their professional career.

• Eligibility: Faculty and professional staff with a minimum of 5 years of service to ISU and LAS, and whose current responsibility includes significant academic advising of undergraduate students. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony. An advisor may receive the award, or its predecessor award, only once.
• Note: Nominations submitted to LAS that satisfy this requirement may be forwarded for consideration of the ISU award.
• Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as an advisor, as documented by student evaluations, student letters of support and/or supporting documentation of peers who work closely with the nominee.

LAS Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentoring

Recognizes the effectiveness of major professors who serve as mentors and who enrich the student-professor relationship by support and attention to detail which enables students to finish their work in a timely and scholarly manner. Major professors considered for this award are expected to be supportive of their students beyond graduation.

• Eligibility: Nominations are restricted to members of the LAS Graduate Faculty who have chaired at least six graduate student committees. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as a graduate mentor, as documented by testimonials from students (current and past) and letters of support from peers.

• Note: Graduate students need to submit nominations for the White Award through their Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) department senators by Nov. 11.

• Similar University Award: Margaret Ellen White Graduate Faculty Award****LAS cannot forward nominations to the Graduate College, as the Margaret Ellen White Award is student driven.  The nominators are encouraged to work with graduate students to submit it as described on the web page: “Nominations will be reviewed by the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) at their November meeting. Graduate students need to submit nominations through their GPSS department senators. The GPSS meeting schedule and list of senators can be found online on the GPSS website. LAS Award for Learning Community Leadership

Recognizes faculty and staff members for outstanding coordination and leadership of a learning community in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

• Eligibility: Faculty and P&S staff involved in coordination of an undergraduate student learning community. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding coordination and leadership of a learning community in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Documentation should include feedback from student participants and learning community mentors.

LAS Award for Early Achievement in Teaching

Recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding teaching performance unusually early in their professional careers.

• Eligibility:
  • Tenured or tenure-track faculty who have a maximum of 6 years teaching experience since starting a tenure-track position and have completed a minimum of two academic years of appointment as an ISU faculty member. OR
  • Term faculty who are within six years since starting a faculty position and have completed a minimum of two academic years of appointment as an ISU faculty member.
  • Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as a teacher, as documented by students and peers.

Recognizes faculty members for outstanding teaching performance over an extended period of time.

• Eligibility:
  • Tenured faculty status with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU prior to current academic year and 10 years of classroom experience in higher education. Morrill exclusion OR
  • Term faculty status with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU prior to current academic year and 10 years of classroom experience in higher education.

• Criteria: Documented evidence, including student and peer evaluations, of outstanding classroom teaching performance, supplemented by evidence of instructional contributions outside the classroom.

LAS Award for Impact on Student Success

Recognizes outstanding achievement by staff and faculty who have had a sustained impact on undergraduate student success. This positive impact may be with individual students or a group of students inside or outside the classroom.

• Eligibility: Faculty members, P&S staff, and merit staff in LAS are eligible. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony. The nomination should identify one of the following types:
  • Individual staff award
  • Individual faculty award
  • Team award (faculty, staff, or a combination). A team includes three or more LAS employees and could be as large as a department or program
  • Note: The merit award is an LAS award only.
• Criteria: Nominees regularly exhibit at least one of these actions/characteristics:
  • Collaborate across campus, colleges, and/or units to generate impactful programs and practices to advance student success.
  • Improve student success by implementing technologies, techniques, practices, or programs that transform the student experience inside or outside of the classroom.
  • Support student co-curricular success beyond the classroom experience
  • Utilize a variety of high-impact educational practices to enhance student success
  • The most compelling nominations will provide evidence of impact on student success.

LAS Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Introductory Teaching

Recognize outstanding performance in teaching undergraduate introductory classes (defined as entry-level courses in the discipline).

• Eligibility:
  • Tenured or tenure-track faculty with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU, who regularly teach an entry-level course; OR
  • Term faculty with a minimum of 2 years of service at ISU, who regularly teach an entry-level course.
  • Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.Note: For the ‘introductory teaching’ award LAS requires tenured/tenure track faculty with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU, while the University requires tenured faculty with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU. Furthermore, ISU requires at least 5 years of service prior to the current academic year whereas LAS requires 5 years prior to the nomination. Only LAS offers an award to Term faculty.  For this award, LAS can forward only those nominations that satisfy University requirements.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of the ability to offer high-quality instruction in introductory courses, the ability to excite interest and involve students without compromising scholarship, and the ability to enhance student performance in future courses in the discipline.

LAS Award for Early Achievement in Departmental Leadership

Recognizes a department chair or school director, who has demonstrated exceptional impact on advancing the faculty, staff, students and/or programs in their department or school within the first 3 years of their leadership role.

• Eligibility: Current department chairs or school directors who have held their first leadership position for fewer than 3 years. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Nominees should demonstrate a measurable impact within their department or school such as advancing academic or research programs, introducing new or enhancing existing initiatives central to the department or school mission, streamlining or enhancing program efficiencies, or promoting excellence within the faculty, staff or students. The award recognizes the early impact of a chair/director in creating a new culture within a program, reorganizing or redirecting program activities or significantly advancing programmatic missions of the department/school soon after taking on a leadership role. A chair/director may only win the award once.

LAS Award for Outstanding Achievement in Departmental Leadership

Recognizes a department chair or school director who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in advancing the faculty, staff, students and programs in their department/school.

• Eligibility: Current department chairs or school directors. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony. Past recipients of the LAS and similar University award are ineligible.
• Criteria: Nominees should demonstrate leadership in advancing programs and initiatives central to the department/school; should create a department/school climate in which students, faculty, and staff can do their best work; should have a record of helping to advance the careers of faculty and staff; should respond effectively to student, faculty and staff issues and concerns; should represent the department/school well to the college, university, profession and alumni; should manage the day-to-day operations of the department/school efficiently; should provide leadership to the department/school in achieving departmental/school, college and university goals; should have continued involvement in academic endeavors; and the strongest candidates will have had campus-wide impact.  A chair/director may only win the award once.

LAS Champion Award

Recognizes outstanding employees who have advanced the university’s land grant mission in ways that significantly impact the environment for student, faculty, or staff success at Iowa State. These contributions may be inside or outside the classroom.

• Eligibility: Faculty members, professional and merit staff, and teams are eligible. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony. A team nomination should include three or more LAS employees and could be as large as a department or program. Note: The team award is an LAS award only.
• Number of awards: One for each category
• Criteria:
  • Nominees regularly exhibit one or more of these actions/characteristics:
    • Collaborate across campus, colleges, and/or units to generate positive effects on the university environment by fostering a collegiate environment of belonging where all members of the Iowa State Community can engage.
    • Exemplary performance and positive impact aligned with the university’s strategic plan to be the university that cultivates a welcoming environment where students, faculty, and staff flourish.
    • A continuing commitment to promote programs and initiatives that foster success.

LAS Award for Achievement in Economic Development in Iowa

Recognizes faculty and staff members for outstanding ISU-based achievements in advancing the economic development of the state of Iowa.

• Eligibility: Individuals or teams of nine (9)- or twelve (12)-month faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made an economic development contribution at ISU. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.  Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the economic development of the State of Iowa. Evidence of this contribution will include starting companies that have employed Iowa residents or had a significant positive impact on Iowa residents or providing specific documented support to Iowa companies that have resulted in economic gains for that firm.

LAS Award for Achievement in Intellectual Property

Recognizes faculty and staff members for outstanding ISU-based achievements in producing intellectual property.

• Eligibility: Individuals or teams of nine (9)- or twelve (12)-month faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made important IP contributions at ISU, preferably leading to patents and licenses. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony. Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the development of patentable discoveries. The significance of this intellectual property will be demonstrated by its being licensed and used by industries both within and outside of the state of Iowa. The success of this IP and the significance of the licensing should in part be documented by the resources that this IP returns to the university. For some IP, such as open source software that cannot be patented or licensed, the nomination should demonstrate substantial national impact.

LAS Award for Early Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice

Recognizes a faculty, campus staff or field staff member who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in extension and/or professional practice unusually early in their professional career.

• Eligibility: Members of the faculty or professional staff with no more than 6 years of experience post Ph.D. (or other appropriate terminal degree) and a minimum of 2 years at Iowa State. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: A record of exemplary performance as documented by clients and peers.

LAS Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice

Recognizes a faculty, campus staff or field staff member who has demonstrated outstanding performance in statewide leadership in extension and/or professional practice and has achieved national recognition of their contributions to outreach activities.

• Eligibility: Members of the faculty or professional staff with a minimum of 10 years of service at ISU. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contributions to the university’s outreach mission over an extended period of time, including testimony from peers and clients.

• Corresponding University Award: ISU Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice  Must be submitted through LAS. Deadline and submission process are the same as for the LAS award.

Distinguished Service in Extension and Outreach

Given as a tribute to Marvin A. Anderson, the first Dean of Extension at Iowa State University, this is the top career award in ISU Extension and Outreach. It recognizes sustained distinguished performance and educational contributions to ISU and clientele through ISU Extension and Outreach programs.

• Eligibility: All ISU Extension and Outreach campus, field, and county employees (faculty and staff) are eligible. A recipient may only receive this award once. Nominees must have at least ten years of service. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.
• Note: The Distinguished Service in Extension and Outreach Award is a university award and does not have an LAS equivalent.

R.K. Bliss Extension Award

The R.K. Bliss Extension Award recognizes outstanding career achievement by an ISU Extension and Outreach staff member in developing an overall or continuing extension education program. For complete award guidelines and nomination information, please visit: Eligibility: Any ISU Extension or Outreach employee—faculty and staff, campus, field, or county who has at least ten years of service. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.

Note: The R.K. Bliss Extension Award is a university award and does not have an LAS equivalent.

LAS Institutional Service Award

Recognizes a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty or staff for a history of exemplary institutional service that has benefited the department, College and/or the university.

• Eligibility: Any faculty or staff member, including administrative officials with faculty rank. Former recipients of the award are not eligible. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Documented evidence of an established history of exemplary service and leadership on committees critical to the operation and function of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, its divisions, departments, offices and/or programs.

• Submissions: All nomination materials should be uploaded to this LAS CyBox folder as one document.
• Corresponding University Award: Not applicable

LAS International Service Award

Recognizes ISU faculty for outstanding international service in terms of teaching, research, or administration, within the United States or abroad.

• Eligibility: Any faculty member, including administrative officials with faculty rank. Former recipients of the award are not eligible. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
• Criteria: Significant and sustained contributions to the internationalization of Iowa State University; evidence of excellence and impact in scholarship related to position description, including where applicable, research and outreach of international dimensions, infusing international perspectives in teaching, and international service.
• Submissions: All nomination materials should be uploaded to this LAS CyBox folder as one document.
• Corresponding University Award: International Service Award  Must be submitted through LAS. Deadline and submission process are the same as for the LAS award.
