The LAS College will review, select and forward candidate nominations for corresponding university awards from the nominations submitted to the college, and for similar awards when appropriate as noted below. For corresponding awards, all LAS eligibility and review criteria are intended to agree with the university criteria.
Although some university awards allow for direct nomination, most nominations route through the academic colleges (see the individual descriptions). Nominees for LAS awards must be LAS faculty or staff members. Past recipients are not eligible to receive the same LAS award again.

Eligibility: Nominees should hold the rank of professor (tenured or term) and should have served for at least ten years on the Iowa State University faculty prior to the beginning of the academic year in which they are nominated. The nominees must be individuals whose contributions extend well beyond a one-time impact. Having held an administrative position in and of itself is insufficient for consideration for this recognition. Faculty who have served as administrators (e.g., department chairs/school directors, deans, vice presidents, provost or staff members in those offices) may be nominated only after they have been out of their administrative roles and functioning as faculty members for at least three years. ISU Interdisciplinary Team Research Award
The Interdisciplinary Team Research Award recognizes an interdisciplinary team of faculty researchers (at least 2 or more) with outstanding achievements who have made a significant contribution to the University’s research and scholarship mission through successful interdisciplinary collaborations. Eligibility: At least two of the nominees must hold the rank of Assistant Professor or above, and must be from different departments. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.

LAS will select nominations for the corresponding University Awards from the candidates submitted to the College.
A faculty member may not be considered for two LAS teaching awards in the same year. Faculty who have received an LAS teaching award in the past five years are not eligible for an LAS teaching award in this cycle.
University Awards

The recipients of the Cassling Family Faculty Awards for Early Achievement in Teaching and Outstanding Achievement in Teaching are chosen from among candidates nominated for teaching awards. The recipient of the Shakeshaft Master Teacher Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences is chosen from among candidates in the humanities and social science disciplines nominated for teaching awards. Neither of these awards accepts direct nominations but we encourage nominations for other teaching awards, which will also be reviewed for these awards.
LAS Award for Early Achievement in Academic Advising
Purpose: To recognize ISU faculty or professional staff who have demonstrated outstanding performance in advising Iowa State University undergraduate students early in their professional careers.
Eligibility: ISU faculty or professional staff who have a minimum of two years and not more than five years of advising responsibilities for undergraduates at the time of application. An advisor may receive the award, or its predecessor award, only once. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.
Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as an advisor, documented by student ratings of teaching, student letters of support and/or supporting documentation of peers who work closely with the nominee.

LAS Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentoring
Purpose: To recognize the effectiveness of major professors who serve as mentors and who enrich the student-professor relationship by support and attention to detail which enables students to finish their work in a timely and scholarly manner. Major professors considered for this award are expected to be supportive of their students beyond graduation.
Eligibility: Nominations are restricted to members of the LAS Graduate Faculty who have chaired at least six graduate student committees. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Criteria: Evidence of outstanding performance as a graduate mentor, as documented by testimonials from students (current and past) and letters of support from peers.

Purpose: To recognize outstanding performance in teaching undergraduate introductory classes (defined as entry-level courses in the discipline).

- Tenured or tenure-track faculty with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU, who regularly teach an entry-level course; OR
- Term faculty with a minimum of 2 years of service at ISU, who regularly teach an entry-level course.
- Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Note: For the ‘introductory teaching’ award LAS requires tenured/tenure track faculty with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU, while the University requires tenured faculty with a minimum of 5 years of service at ISU. Furthermore, ISU requires at least 5 years of service prior to the current academic year whereas LAS requires 5 years prior to the nomination. Only LAS offers an award to Term faculty. For this award, LAS can forward only those nominations that satisfy University requirements.
Criteria: Documented evidence of the ability to offer high-quality instruction in introductory courses, the ability to excite, interest, and involve students without compromising scholarship, and the ability to enhance student performance in future courses in the discipline.

Purpose: To recognize a department chair or school director, who has demonstrated exceptional impact on advancing the faculty, staff, students and/or programs in their department or school within the first 3 years of their leadership role.
Eligibility: Current department chairs or school directors who have held their first leadership position for fewer than 3 years. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Criteria: Nominees should demonstrate a measurable impact within their department or school such as advancing academic or research programs, introducing new or enhancing existing initiatives central to the department or school mission, streamlining or enhancing program efficiencies, or promoting excellence within the faculty, staff or students. The award recognizes the early impact of a chair/director in creating a new culture within a program, reorganizing or redirecting program activities or significantly advancing programmatic missions of the department/school soon after taking on a leadership role. A chair/director may only win the award once.

Purpose: To recognize faculty and staff members for outstanding ISU-based achievements in advancing the economic development of the state of Iowa.
Eligibility: Individuals or teams of nine (9)- or twelve (12)-month faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made an economic development contribution at ISU. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony. Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.
Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the economic development of the State of Iowa. Evidence of this contribution will include starting companies that have employed Iowa residents or had a significant positive impact on Iowa residents or providing specific documented support to Iowa companies that have resulted in economic gains for that firm.

LAS Award for Achievement in Intellectual Property
Purpose: To recognize faculty and staff members for outstanding ISU-based achievements in producing intellectual property.
Eligibility: Individuals or teams of nine (9)- or twelve (12)-month faculty members and/or Professional and Scientific staff who have made important IP contributions at ISU, preferably leading to patents and licenses. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony. Faculty and staff may only receive this award one time.
Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contribution to the development of patentable discoveries. The significance of this intellectual property will be demonstrated by its being licensed and used by industries both within and outside of the state of Iowa. The success of this IP and the significance of the licensing should in part be documented by the resources that this IP returns to the university. For some IP, such as open source software that cannot be patented or licensed, the nomination should demonstrate substantial national impact.

LAS Award for Early Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice
Purpose: To recognize a faculty, campus staff or field staff member who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in extension and/or professional practice unusually early in their professional career.
Eligibility: Members of the faculty or professional staff with no more than 6 years of experience post Ph.D. (or other appropriate terminal degree) and a minimum of 2 years at Iowa State. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Criteria: A record of exemplary performance as documented by clients and peers.

LAS Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice
Purpose: To recognize a faculty, campus staff or field staff member who has demonstrated outstanding performance in statewide leadership in extension and/or professional practice and has achieved national recognition of their contributions to outreach activities.
Eligibility: Members of the faculty or professional staff with a minimum of 10 years of service at ISU. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Criteria: Documented evidence of outstanding contributions to the university’s outreach mission over an extended period of time, including testimony from peers and clients.

Distinguished Service in Extension and Outreach
Given as a tribute to Marvin A. Anderson, the first Dean of Extension at Iowa State University, this is the top career award in ISU Extension and Outreach. It recognizes sustained distinguished performance and educational contributions to ISU and clientele through ISU Extension and Outreach programs. Eligibility: All ISU Extension and Outreach campus, field, and county employees (faculty and staff) are eligible. A recipient may only receive this award once. Nominees must have at least ten years of service. Recipients must be Iowa State employees at the time of the University Awards Ceremony.

R.K. Bliss Extension Award
The R.K. Bliss Extension Award recognizes outstanding career achievement by an ISU Extension and Outreach staff member in developing an overall or continuing extension education program. LAS Institutional Service Award
Purpose: Recognizes a member of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty or staff for a history of exemplary institutional service that has benefited the department, College and/or the university.
Eligibility: Any faculty or staff member, including administrative officials with faculty rank. Former recipients of the award are not eligible. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Criteria: Documented evidence of an established history of exemplary service and leadership on committees critical to the operation and function of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, its divisions, departments, offices and/or programs.

Purpose: To recognize ISU faculty for outstanding international service in terms of teaching, research, or administration, within the United States or abroad.
Eligibility: Any faculty member, including administrative officials with faculty rank. Former recipients of the award are not eligible. Recipients must be ISU employees at the time of the awards ceremony.
Criteria: Significant and sustained contributions to the internationalization of Iowa State University; evidence of excellence and impact in scholarship related to position description, including where applicable, research and outreach of international dimensions, infusing international perspectives in teaching, and international service.
